TEENAGE striker Dylan Asonganyi has joined Oxford United on a one-year deal.

The 19-year-old came through the youth ranks at Milton Keynes Dons when U's boss Karl Robinson was the manager.

He went on to make ten appearances for the club, scoring once, before his decade-long stay with the club ended when he was released in June.

And Asonganyi then grasped his opportunity by impressing during a trial while at the club's pre-season training camp last week.

He said: "It was a good few days in Wales and I'm just happy to sign and get started.

"There was a lot of running, the sessions were tough but it's good for the team and it was good bonding as well.

"I was excited just to get back training and meeting the gaffer again after a long time.

"I'm grateful he's brought me into this position. The lads are very lovely and great to work with, I'm happy to be here."

Asongayi was first named in a Dons first-team squad aged 16 and he was linked with several big Premier League clubs before an injury slowed his progress.

A senior debut came against Bury two years ago and he went on to score the opening goal in a Carabao Cup tie against Charlton Athletic in the next game.

Asonganyi made six appearances for the Dons last season before being sent out on loan to Maidenhead United in March, only for the coronavirus lockdown to come in after one appearance.

Robinson told the club's website: "As a kid there were a lot of clubs looking at him but he suffered an injury and then hasn’t had the opportunities which he would have liked.

"So we took a look and he pushed himself in every session, clearly has a desire and we think he will come here determined to show what he can truly do.”
