OXFORD United's new signings have caught the eye of boss Karl Robinson in the opening days of pre-season.

The training camp in Wales, which finished yesterday, offered the summer arrivals a chance to integrate with the team.

While Matty Taylor was part of last season's group and Marcus McGuane's loan was only confirmed late in the stay, it was an important few days for Joel Cooper and Sean Clare to settle in.

Robinson told the club's website: "They've all brought something different to the team, which was needed.

"(Olympic sprinter) Darren Campbell was here and watching him (Clare) in the gym. He was saying 'wow, there's some power in the boy'.

"Joel has shocked me. I knew how good he was, but he's an amazing character.

"You'd think he had been here for two or three years and I really like the way he's fitted in."

There are two other players who were part of the group but have not been named yet ahead of proposed moves.

The Oxford Mail understands neither were Liam Kelly, although the Feyenoord midfielder remains on their wish-list to bring back, probably on loan.

Robinson said: "With the two boys people will find out about eventually I've been super-impressed by one and really surprised by the other one, from France.

"It's been an eye-opener. I came here a bit not sure – we've lost that bit of star dust with (Marcus) Browney and Nathan (Holland).

"It's a real good group, one which has certainly used the play-offs as a positive.

"I don't care how hard this season is going to be, nothing is going to match that. This is about digging in and making sure we can be successful together.

"I'm leaving here surprised, in a good way."
