EDDIE Pepperell faces a battle to make the cut at the Hero Open tomorrow after enduring a tough opening round.

The golfer from Abingdon, who reverted to an old putter at the Forest of Arden after throwing his new one into a pond in frustration last weekend, carded a four-over par round of 76.

Among the early starters, the world No 89 got off to a good start with a birdie at the second hole.

But double bogeys on the fourth and ninth, along with another dropped shot on the sixth saw him reach the turn in four-over.

Birdies at the 12th and 14th were partially wiped out by a bogey in between.

A further dropped shot on the 17th rounded off a frustrating day to leave Pepperell near the bottom of the field.
