EDDIE Pepperell tumbled down the leaderboard on the final day at the Betfred British Masters.

The Abingdon golfer had three double bogeys on the back nine at Close House to card a six-over par 77.

It saw him finish in a share of 47th place on two-under for the tournament, which was his first since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Pepperell's fourth round struggles undid much of his good work over the opening three days.

Rounds of 67, 69 and 69 got him into a tie for 14th place and in a position to attack.

A birdie at the second hole got the 29-year-old off to a great start, but a bogey at the sixth meant he reached the turn level for his round.

It unravelled after a dropped shot at the tenth, which was followed by a five at the par-three 12th hole.

Pepperell immediately picked up a shot, but double bogeys at the 16th and 18th saw him slump down the standings.

Italty's Renato Paratore won the title on 18-under.

Pepperell is due to back in action on Thursday at the Hero Open, hosted by Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club, near Birmingham.

Elsewhere, Oxfordshire's Cara Gainer finished in a share of second place at the Rose Ladies Series event at Bearwood Lakes.

The level par round of 72 got her into a six-way tie, just one shot behind winner Georgia Hall.

It lifted Gainer to ninth in the order of merit with one more event left before the grand final next month.
