A PLAN to tackle the "difficult decisions" facing football clubs in the coronavirus pandemic will be on the agenda this week.

The Premier League, EFL and players' union the PFA initially met on Friday to discuss the mounting problems caused by Covid-19.

The financial strains of the shutdown are beginning to show, with two of Sky Bet League One's biggest names putting some staff on furlough.

After Sunderland made an announcement before the weekend, Bolton Wanderers have now followed suit, while senior management will continue with a significant pay reduction.

A statement read: "We have spoken previously about our admiration for the employees of this business, whose loyalty in the face of adversity has been beyond commendable.

"It is for this reason that we wish we could guarantee all jobs.

"However, as we move forward and the effects of the crisis become even more serious, difficult decisions may need to be taken in order to preserve both businesses."

Professional football in England was already on hold until at least April 30.

For the moment that date has not changed, but the bodies have reiterated it can only happen when conditions are suitable.

They will discuss the issues again over the next few days, but there was an acknowledgement tough calls lie ahead.

"The Premier League, EFL and PFA agreed that difficult decisions will have to be taken in order to mitigate the economic impact of the current suspension of professional football in England and agreed to work together to arrive at shared solutions," a joint statement said.

"Further meetings will take place with a view to formulating a joint plan to deal with the difficult circumstances facing the leagues, their clubs, players, staff and fans."
