OXFORD United’s James Henry has been selected in the Sky Bet League One journalists’ team of the season.

While the campaign is suspended until at least the end of April, it is three-quarters complete.

That is ample chance to have caught the eye, so the writers who cover the third tier clubs have got together to vote for a best XI.

Each one put forward their selection based on the games they had seen this season.

The only rule was they could not pick a player from the club they cover.

A 4-2-3-1 formation was used, as it was the most popular choice.

THE FINAL XI

Goalkeeper

  • Marko Marosi (Coventry City)

The first of three players from the league leaders, more than any other club.

Marosi, a summer signing from Doncaster Rovers, has played every single minute of the Sky Blues’ campaign.

While he conceded three against the U’s in August, the Slovakian has kept 14 clean sheets this season in League One’s meanest defence.

Right Back

  • Fankaty Dabo (Coventry City)

Another of Mark Robins’ additions last summer, this time from Chelsea.

United fans will remember him well, after the full back scored two late own goals in the 3-3 draw at the Kassam Stadium.

The 24-year-old was also sent off against Portsmouth in August, but after a bumpy start his season has clearly picked up.

Centre Backs

  • Harry Souttar (Fleetwood Tn)

The towering 21-year-old is a Stoke City player, but has spent the last season and a half on loan at Highbury.

As well as his defensive duties, Souttar is also a threat going forward – scoring a winner against Doncaster and an equaliser at Portsmouth to keep Joey Barton’s men in the promotion mix.

He also has four goals for Australia this season, bagging braces against Nepal and Chinese Taipei.

League One team of the season: Five Oxford United players who nearly made it

  • Michael Ihiekwe (Rotherham Utd)

The backbone of the Millers’ back four, the 27-year-old received the division’s second-highest number of votes.

A virtual ever-present for Paul Warne’s men after spending last season on loan at Accrington, his four goals include one against United in October.

Left Back

  • Joe Jacobson (Wycombe W)

The Welshman turned 33 this season, but his wand of a left foot shows no signs of losing its magic.

A reliable presence in League One’s surprise package, his real value to the Chairboys comes from dead ball situations.

Jacobson’s ten goals this season include a hat-trick against Lincoln City in September which featured two strikes direct from corners.

Defensive midfield

  • Matt Crooks (Rotherham Utd)

A dominating presence in the division’s most powerful side.

Although a spell at Glasgow Rangers did not work, the 26-year-old reignited his carer at Northampton Town.

He joined Rotherham in January 2019 and has been a big part of their success this season, netting 11 times.

  • Liam Walsh (Coventry City)

The former Evertonian is among Coventry’s young guns who have torn up the division.

On loan from Bristol City, Walsh has thrived in his first full season of playing week-in, week-out.

With five assists and three goals, he has helped keep Coventry on track.

Attacking midfield

  • Chris Maguire (Sunderland)

The Scotsman needs no introduction for United fans after his successful spell with the club.

Maguire has been key to the Black Cats’ surge up the table and clearly relishes the big stage.

Now into double figures for both goals and assists in the league this season, he would be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

  • James Henry (Oxford Utd)

The only one in Karl Robinson’s team to get the nod, but could hardly be left out.

Technically superb, the 30-year-old can also be counted on in the big moments.

A dozen league goals are complemented by nine assists, many for Matty Taylor.

  • Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth)

The Irishman, 23, is closing in on 100 appearances for Pompey, despite signing less than two years ago.

A haul of 11 goals and five assists from the left wing tells its own story – let him cut inside at your peril.

STRIKER

  • Ivan Toney (Peterborough Utd)

The season may not be finished, but the top scorer prize could easily be given out now.

Only three writers did not pick the striker whose 24-goal haul is eight more than anyone else.

It includes a double against the U’s last month, when he gave Robinson’s men a torrid afternoon.
