MATTY Taylor is in no rush to decide his future – the striker is having too much fun in the present.

Goal No 17 of the Bristol City loanee’s season was one of his most important, swivelling late on to seal a 2-1 win for Oxford United.

The high-quality finish sunk struggling Southend United on a day when Karl Robinson’s side were well below their recent standards.

But it fired them to a fourth straight victory – which has seen Taylor score six times – to get back into the Sky Bet League One play-off places.

United’s supporters again chanted their hope that the Oxfordshire-born front man would stay beyond this season.

Taylor is out of contract this summer and Robinson has made it clear United would love to do a deal.

But for the moment the 29-year-old is happy to just focus on what he does best.

He said: “I think in January I knew Bristol had a recall option which to be honest I didn’t want, I wanted to stay here and keep playing football and scoring goals.

“I’m a free agent come the summer and we’ll sit down and have those conversations I’m sure.

“I don’t want it to distract me at the moment because I’m enjoying my football and scoring goals.

“I’ll put it to one side and there will be a time and a place for that conversation.

“Fingers crossed, I’d love to get promoted but it’s a long way off and we’ve not achieved anything yet.”

Robinson said: “That’s probably his best finish, with his weaker foot.

“At any level, if you’ve got a goalscorer in your ranks it’s important you keep them.”

Taylor’s goals have been a big reason behind United’s surge back into the top six.

REACTION: Cool heads key to late win, says Karl Robinson

It came at the end of a draining month which saw them squeeze nine games into 29 days.

And halfway through the month the gap to the play-offs was eight points, but Taylor paid credit to the way everyone in the camp stuck to their task.

He said: “We half looked dead and buried a month ago, but we didn’t panic.

“From where we were it was a bit doom and gloom, but now we’re right back in it.

“The table changes week by week and it could change a lot – good or bad – in another week or two.

“You’ve just got to stay focused on each game, there’s ten big ones left.”
