OXFORD City goalkeeper Craig King has revealed his pride after he was selected for England C against Wales.

The 23-year-old was picked for the International Challenge Match at Caernarfon Town on March 24 after a string of outstanding displays for the Vanarama National League South outfit.

And the ex-Luton Town stopper is relishing the chance to represent the Three Lions.

He said: “I’m obviously very happy to picked for the squad.

“This is the main England C squad, so it will be a proud day to wear the shirt.”

With most players in the squad at Vanarama National League sides, King, who has been City’s No 1 for two seasons, admitted he was a little surprised at the call-up.

He said: “I think I’m the only player from Vanarama South or North to be selected, so that’s something in itself. It will be a great experience.

“All you can do is play week-in, week-out for your club and do your best – you never know who is watching.

“I’ve been fortunate that some of the right people have been watching.

“It’s a good feeling knowing that I’m being recognised for doing something right.

“It’s an achievement that I’m proud of and I will learn from the day and hopefully build on it.”

King was also delighted City have been recognised.

He said: “Hopefully more scouts will come along and see how good our team is.

“We’re a footballing side with many good players, and on our day can beat anybody and we do feel that we play exciting football.

“Hopefully my selection will boost the view that there are good players at our club.”

King was in action for City on Saturday, as they drew 2-2 in a friendly at home to Thame United.

Both sides had a free weekend due to their scheduled league opponents playing in the Buildbase FA Trophy.

A trialist put the home side in front after ten minutes, but Thame hit back to lead by the interval.

Greg Hackett equalised via a free-kick, while Ryan Blake’s penalty put the visitors in front nine minutes before the break.

Josh Ashby levelled the scores with a spot kick nine minutes from time, while unusually for a friendly Thame had a man sent off late on for a challenge on Kyran Lofthouse.

The artificial surface at Court Place Farm allowed the game to go ahead, but the wet weather postponed all the BetVictor Southern League fixtures involving Oxfordshire clubs on Saturday.
