Ahead of each of United's games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.
October 15, 1988: Ipswich Town 1, Oxford United 2
OXFORD United's tactical gamble worked a treat as they beat Ipswich Town 2-1 at Portman Road.
U's boss Mark Lawrenson sought to turn around a run of one win in seven games by deploying Neil Slatter as a sweeper.
It was the defender's first league match in almost a year, but he was an instant success as United beat the Division Two high-fliers.
The victory was also the U's first on the road in 13 months, when Slatter had scored the goal that sealed a 1-0 triumph at Derby County in the top division.
Martin Foyle and Jimmy Phillips scored United's goals to grab the headlines, but the win was truly a team effort.
Dean Saunders caused the Ipswich defence all sorts of problems in his penultimate appearance before a controversial £1m transfer to Derby, owned by ex-U's chairman Robert Maxwell.
Meanwhile, visiting goalkeeper Alan Judge played a crucial role in securing victory, saving Romeo Zondervan's penalty and making a great save from Dalian Atkinson late on.
It remains United's only win at Portman Road, but they could not kick on and ended the season 17th.
Oxford United: Judge, Bardsley, Greenall, Slatter, Briggs, J Phillips, L Phillips, Reck, Mustoe, Foyle, Saunders. Substitute: Hill.
