ETHAN Rose’s stunning end to last year has seen him make history.

The Oakley teenager starts 2020 as the first English male singles player to be ranked in the top eight of the Under 19 BWF World Junior Rankings since records began in 2012.

Rose, 17, won the Under 17 French International Championships and Under 19 competitions in Belgium, Germany and Finland in 2019.

He also took Under 17 European Championships bronze.

Elsewhere, Oxfordshire’s Jason Ou struck boys’ doubles gold at the Webber Under 17 tournament in Milton Keynes.

The teenager, with Berkshire’s Ivan Tan, won 13-15, 15-7, 15-10 in the final, before adding boys’ singles bronze.

Eynsham’s Maddy Cook took bronze in the girls’ singles at the Essex Under 19 competition, while Adam Burden secured boys’ doubles bronze with Hampshire’s Andrew Harrison.

The pair, playing up a level, won a tough qualifying group and lost 15-13, 15-13 to the top seeds in the semi-final.
