JORDAN Archer has been thanked for his contribution to Oxford United's season after the expiration of the goalkeeper's short-term deal.

The 26-year-old was a free agent last month, allowing the U's to sign him as cover for Simon Eastwood.

Archer played eight games across three competitions as Karl Robinson's side stayed on track over the busy festive period.

With Eastwood expected to be fit for Saturday's Sky Bet League One game with Rotherham United, the end of the deal works well - with Archer thought to have a moved lined up during the January transfer window.

Last season when the U’s No 1 was injured they brought the highly-rated but inexperienced Jonathan Mitchell into a struggling side.

This time Robinson went for an older head and felt it reaped rewards.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Jordan, he’s a really solid character.

“I think you can see when you bring in a young goalkeeper how confidence can maybe waver, but we’ve seen also when you have a keeper people believe in how that settles the back four down.

“We wish him all the best for his next destination.”
