THIS month marks the end of an eventful decade at Oxford United – and we need you to pick your best XI from the past ten years.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be holding a series of votes on this website, with the full side announced over the festive period.

A shortlist by position will be put forward, with the only restriction being they must have made a minimum of 40 appearances for the U’s.

Your decision should be based on what the players have done for the club since January 1, 2010.

Here are the four options at left back.

Oxford Mail:

Anthony Tonkin, 77 apps

Signed by Chris Wilder in January 2010 as United eyed a push towards promotion from the Conference.

The Cornishman quickly established himself and was part of the side which came through the play-offs, winning the final at Wembley against York City.

He went on to play the majority of games the following season, before being squeezed out in the 2011/12 campaign by the next contender.

Oxford Mail:

Liam Davis, 73 apps

Signed as Wilder aimed for United to take a step forward during their second season back in the Football League.

Quick, technically strong and with an eye for goal, Davis was brought in to mirror Damian Batt at right back.

On his day he had the lot, but injuries increasingly limited his influence, although after leaving the U’s he went on to feature in the Championship with Yeovil Town.

Oxford Mail:

Joe Skarz, 107 apps

Revolutions rarely begin with a left back, but Skarz turned out to be the first big jigsaw piece of United’s League Two promotion-winning season when he signed in January 2015.

Rock solid, full of experience and a hugely popular member of the dressing room, the defender was Mr Consistent.

Skarz was the ultimate professional, even bringing his own food to a gala dinner at United.

That attention to dietary detail proved key during the pivotal run-in during the 2015/16 season. After rupturing his groin it looked like his campaign was over, but a remarkable regime saw him return in less than four weeks to steady the ship.

It was an astonishing show of determination and he broke down again – but only after helping the U’s to two priceless victories.

Oxford Mail:

Josh Ruffels, 246 apps

The boy from Kidlington started out at United before going off to come through the youth system at Coventry City.

He returned in 2013 and for the first few years was a midfielder on the fringes.

But like Sam Long, Ruffels fought his way back into the fold time and again, making 22 appearances in the promotion season.

Injuries elsewhere in the camp saw him drafted in as an emergency left back, where he played in the finale at home to Wycombe Wanderers.

It is a position he has since claimed as his own, quietly turning into an accomplished defender with an eye for goals in stoppage-time.

Now inside United’s top 30 appearance makers of all time, at 26 he has plenty of time to force his way into the upper echelons.
