JORDAN Archer is banking on experience getting him up to speed quickly today as the goalkeeper comes in for an Oxford United debut.

The 26-year-old finalised a four-week deal yesterday in time to face Shrewsbury Town at the Kassam Stadium this afternoon.

United were forced into an emergency move as cover for Simon Eastwood, who is expected to be out for at least five weeks.

Archer was available as a free agent after failing to agree terms with a club in the summer following his release from Millwall.

While he has been training with Aston Villa for the past few weeks, it is almost nine months since the Scotland international’s last competitive game.

He said: “I’ve been training against some top players, but there’s nothing like playing games.

“I haven’t played in a while, but I’ve made more than 200 appearances so I can draw on that experience.

“Nothing like that will faze me.”

Robinson had three players on his shortlist to replace Eastwood, but Archer got the nod due to his availability as a permanent signing, rather than a seven-day emergency loan.

The lack of game time is a concern, though.

He said: “Our worry with Jordan is he’s not played.

“For a goalkeeper the hand-eye co-ordination (you need) with bodies working in front of you, all these things training can’t replicate.

“That is my big concern, but he’s a confident young man, he’s been promoted out of League One.”

Archer, who went up with Millwall in 2016/17, has had just two training sessions to get acquainted with his new teammates.

But he does not believe it will be an issue to build an understanding with United’s back four.

He said: “They will know what I’m about and hopefully I’ll pick up what they’ve been about.

“When you don’t play on Saturdays you keep tabs on all the leagues and I’ve seen the boys doing well, so I’m just happy to be a part of it.

“When you’re younger you’re so hasty to showcase what you’ve got.

“I’m just going to stay calm, the boys have been doing well so I’m just going to try to buy into that.”

Alex Gorrin is suspended, while the game comes too soon for fellow midfielders Cameron Brannagan and Shandon Baptiste.

Shrewsbury are without winger Shaun Whalley (calf), midfielder Louis Thompson and striker Callum Lang (ankle).
