TWO former teammates will be competing against each other at tonight’s Oxfordshire Sports Awards.

Oxford Harlequins under 16 captain Jack Allinson played for the club’s younger age groups with James Coles, who he joins on the junior sportsman of the year shortlist.

Coles is included for cricketing feats that include representing England under 16s and playing at Lord's and he said the sports awards will be another highlight.

He said: “There’s been quite a few moments that were quite memorable. 

“The whole experience of Lord’s was just crazy – they treated us like professional cricketers, it was perfect.”

Meanwhile, Allinson plays for Wasps academy and scored a try within minutes of coming on for his debut against Leicester Tigers, but he is determined to continue progressing.

He said: “The hard work has paid off, but I’m never safe from being dropped so I’ve just got to keep working.”

Completing the shortlist is cycle speedway star Will Jeffrey, who captained England and Team GB’s under 18s to victory at the world championships.

The Horspath Hammers regular is honoured to have led his country, but knows the privilege of flying the flag for his sport in the county.

He said: “There’s nothing more humbling than being able to captain your country.

“Not many people from Oxfordshire do my sport, so it’s almost putting it on the map.”
