ROISIN Browne proved a class apart as she claimed victory in the first round of the new season at Bicester Heritage.

The Cherwell Runners member crossed the line in 25mins 31secs to triumph in the ladies’ race on the flat but testing course.

Browne finished 19 seconds ahead of Sophie Lloyd, of White Horse Harriers, while Oxford Triathlon Club’s Rebecca Duxbury was eight seconds further back in third.

It was the league’s first visit to Bicester Heritage and the ground was firm underfoot, despite the previous day’s heavy rain.

And Swindon Harriers athlete Ben Cole had no problem taking to the conditions as he won the men’s race by 39 seconds.

Cole finished in an impressive 30.07, beating the highest-placed Oxfordshire athlete, Oxford Triathlon Club’s Joss Cheli.

It was a double podium for the Swindon club, with Simon Byrne seven seconds behind Cheli in third.

Eynsham Road Runner Liz McAllister just missed out on a place on the podium in the women’s race, but took the vet 35 category to finish fourth overall.

Radley Athletics Club’s Emma Huepfl was the top vet 45 in eighth, while Banbury’s Rosalind Kelling came home in 31st to take the vet 55 crown.

Helen Turley, of Headington Road Runners, was the top vet 65, finishing 85th.

Witney Road Runner Tegs Jones was the best of the rest in the men’s race to top the vet 40 category.

He finished 10 seconds ahead of Oxford Brookes University’s Otto Copping, who was the fastest under 20 in fifth.

Fergus Campbell, of Headington Road Runners, placed 38th to take the vet 50 title, while clubmate John Griffiths was the top vet 60.

Oxford’s John Exley was the first across the line in the vet 70 category.

Meanwhile, Johnny James edged out Radley teammates Rowan Miell-Ingram and Benjamin Cumberland in the boys’ under 15/17 race.

Oxford’s Julian Laird won the under 13 event and Radley runner Jonas Tipping claimed the under 11 title.

Highworth’s Kiya Dee won the under 15/17 opener for the second season in a row, while Isabelle Martin bagged the under 13 crown.

Bicester’s Elsie Jacobs won the under 11 event, while Jago Behagg claimed Radley’s third victory of the day in the under 9 girls and boys’ race.
