A STIRRING second half display saw Oxford City come from behind to record their first Vanarama National League South victory in two months.

Zac McEachran and Eddie Jones were on target to secure a 2-1 win against in-form Slough Town at Court Place Farm, which took them out of the relegation zone.

In the first game since Mark Jones’s exit, Justin Merritt and Andy Ballard were in charge and made two changes to the line-up.

McEachran was fit to return, while striker Elliot Benyon made his first start.

The latter came close to a goal midway through the first half, springing the offside trap but saw his shot fly just wide.

Slough, who had not lost in the league since August, came on strongly as the half wore on.

City goalkeeper Craig King was called into action on a couple of occasions, but he was beaten on the stroke of half-time.

Former City captain Scott Davies delivered a free-kick to the back post, where George Wells – who had scored a stunning winner in this fixture last season – smashed a finish into the net.

The advantage was short-lived, though.

Within 45 seconds of the second half starting, City had wiped out Slough’s advantage.

A slick move saw McEachran and Kyran Wiltshire slice through the defence, with the former having a simple tap-in from close range.

It got even better for City’s interim bosses 20 minutes from time, via an unlikely source.

This time McEachran was the provider, with a pass over the top which was turned in by Jones, who scored his first goal in what was the defender’s 107th appearance for the club.

The expected Slough backlash followed, but they found King in inspired form.

He was kept busy right the way into stoppage time, when he did well to get two hands on a threatening corner to clear the danger.

Having climbed out of the bottom two, City have the chance to put more daylight between themselves and the drop zone when they visit Dorking Wanderers tomorrow night.
