OXFORD United boss Karl Robinson felt his side were helped by Gillingham making them switch ends.
The U's usually attack the East Stand in the second half, but the visitors decided to swap after the coin toss before kick-off.
It failed to put the hosts off their stride, as James Henry's double either side of Matty Taylor's strike put them 3-0 up before the break.

The scoreline did not change in the second half and with United wary about a hangover following their midweek win over West Ham, Robinson believed it did his side a favour.
He said: "In a peculiar way I thought them turning us round helped us.
"Kicking to that end is something we really enjoy doing."
He added: "It was a true pleasure to watch them.
"It was a really proud moment for me watching this team, one of the most proud I’ve been for many years.
"A few questions were raised to them in the week about discipline and desire."
The head coach also revealed his players had been fired up by pre-match comments by Steve Evans.
When talking about United's 6-0 victory at Lincoln City last weekend, the Gills boss felt it was down to the visitors scoring a "couple of lucky goals".
And Robinson felt it did his team talk for him.
He said: "The players were the ones who told me before the game.
"I would agree with him, I thought Jamo (Henry)'s header was lucky – I’ve never seen him do that before in my life.
"I don’t get too wound up by that. It’s not something I really read.
"I don’t talk much about the opposition, it was more the players.
"It certainly motivated them internally."
Great win today thanks everyone that come out to support us. Yeah because all the goals we score are lucky 🤦♂️🤐

There was also good news on Rob Dickie.
The centre back came off with a back problem, but United's medical staff do not believe it is serious.
