OXFORD United’s victory over Tranmere Rovers may have been run of the mill to most, but boss Karl Robinson says he will remember it for the rest of his life.

It was an emotional day for the head coach, who had family and friends at the Kassam Stadium for what was his 500th game in management.

That is quite a feat considering Robinson only turned 39 on Friday, so the 3-0 success – the 203rd win of his career – was a special moment.

He said: “I was quite nervous before the game.

“I’m never a great one with individual praise, I struggle with that.

“I’ve been quite reflective and have really thanked a lot of people who have helped me deal with some very difficult moments.

“It was nice, my parents, my missus and my daughter were here with some very close friends.

“I know how hard it’s been for them when they sit in with the fans and hear the criticism you get it.

“I can deal with it, but they also have to deal with an awful lot. They are the ones you want to make proud.

“Today was a very strange one for me but we’ve won 3-0 and it will be one I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

“I’d like to get another 500, but that would be it then. This is my life and I wouldn’t swap it for the world.”

Robinson was keen to ensure the spotlight was on the pitch, rather than the technical area.

And he was thrilled with the way United came up with the right answers after being questioned following a five-game winless league run.

He said: “The most important thing is nothing to do with me, it’s about the players.

“I’m so proud with what they’ve gone through over the last few days and how hard they’ve worked.

“They’ve driven each other forward.”
