THE chance to take on Liverpool’s top young prospects will be the big reward on offer for Oxford United’s under 23s tonight.

They visit Huddersfield Town in a play-off to reach the Premier League Cup group stage.

With the draw already made, the winners know they will have home and away games with Liverpool, Sunderland and Wigan Athletic.

The U’s beat Southend United to qualify last season, where they took on Swansea City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Hull City.

And boss Chris Allen is relishing the chance for his side to take on the Terriers in a game which will be staged at the John Smith’s Stadium.

He said: “So much rides on it.

“It’s going to be a really tough game but it’s at their stadium under the lights, which is always better.

“If we do manage to get through there’s six lovely games to look forward to.

“We’ll be preparing right for it – looking at Huddersfield and we’re going up the day before the game to give ourselves a chance.”

While United will start as underdogs, many of their side were part of an under 18 side who knocked Burnley out of last season’s FA Youth Cup.

Allen said: “You’re looking for the same really.

“The lads have experienced playing at big stadiums with great facilities.

“They’ve enjoyed playing against these sides.

“We’re looking to go there and do a number on them.

“In the group we had last season we had some good sides and fared quite well.

“It’s all development at the end of the day.

“They’re not yet in the first team where you battle for three points, so they’re still learning.”
