AHEAD of this evening's Carabao Cup second round clash against Millwall, we looked back at the last time Oxford United hosted The Lions in a cup game.

February 2, 2016: Oxford United 0, Millwall 1

OXFORD United chairman Darryl Eales described reaching Wembley as a 'dream come true' as the U's edged out Millwall to reach the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

More than 10,000 fans watched on as Lee Gregory's second half strike set up a tense finish, but it was not enough to overturn United's 2-0 lead from the area final first leg.

The final whistle was met with jubilation as the U's reached Wembley for just the third time in their 123-year history and Eales was at the centre of the celebrations.

He said: “I am so proud of the coaching staff, the players – they all turned up and gave a fantastic account of themselves – and the fans were just incredible,” he said.

“It was immense and for me it is a dream come true.

“I just can’t believe we are going there (Wembley).

“The league is the priority and we will still attack that with gusto, but boy oh boy does it give the players and the coaching staff a lift.”

There were few clear-cut chances for either side during a nervous first half, with Steve Morison and Kemar Roofe both going close.

United's supporters and the noisy away contingent kept the atmosphere crackling away all evening, but it went up a notch at the start of the second half.

On 54 minutes, Aiden O'Brien found Gregory in the penalty area and the forward turned to place the ball past Benji Buchel.

The U's were not deterred and momentum swung back towards the home side when Mark Beevers was given a straight red for a foul on Danny Hylton.

Michael Appleton's men continued to look for a goal that would make the game safe, but in the end it did not matter.
