JACK Ross has warned his Sunderland players that they need to improve on the basics if they are to achieve promotion, writes JIM TATUM.

The Black Cats shared the spoils with fellow promotion favourites Ipswich Town, as the two sides played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Portman Road.

Luke Garbutt was on target for the second week running to put Ipswich in front, but Lynden Gooch also made it two goals for the season with the equaliser.

The result means Sunderland are without a win after their opening two games.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, Ross said: “The first half was a long way short of where we need to be.

“We had a frank discussion at half-time because we were behind to a team who did the fundamentals much better than us.

"But then we managed to do the basics better and won the second half to take something from the game.

"What it emphasises is that even if you have players with quality - which we have - you have to the simple things well."

Bolton boss Phil Parkinson has insisted that people behind the scenes need to “get sorted” and secure the future of the club.

In an emotional plea following his side’s 0-0 home draw with Coventry, Parkinson also called out businessman Laurence Bassini, who was granted a court order blocking a successful takeover of Bolton.

He told the Bolton News: “Get your heads together quickly and sort this mess out because everybody is absolutely sick and tired of it.

"Mr Bassini, leave us alone, please leave us alone.

“Leave this great club alone to get on with building its future back together."

Wanderers, fielding a side whose average age was 19, are yet to score after two league games and have only made up one point from their 12-point deficit that was handed to them at the start of the season.

Lincoln City and Blackpool recorded impressive away wins to make it two wins from two.

City beat recently-relegated Rotherham United 2-0, while Blackpool swept aside Southend 3-1, despite playing the final 30 minutes with ten men, after James Husband was shown a straight red card.

Fleetwood Town are the only other team in League One with a perfect start, thanks to their 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon.

Town trailed to Kwesi Appiah's first-half opener, but turned things around after the break thanks to goals from Paddy Madden and Josh Morris.

There were also wins for Oxford United, Portsmouth, MK Dons and Burton Albion in week two of the EFL.
