Letcombe 1 (Pendell)

A HEADER 13 minutes from time from Adam Pendell gave Letcombe a shock win over Premier Division high-flyers Witney in the preliminary round of the SBJ Sports Insurance Challenge Cup on Saturday.

The Division 1 West visitors had the first effort in a turgid first half when Tom Patten tried to catch Chris Webb out from fully 40 yards, but the ball drifted over the bar.

On the stroke of half-time, Witney went close when a corner from Luke Brandon headed against the bar by Gary Wickens.

Witney were more positive in the second half, but found the Letcombe defence in excellent form.

Tom Patten, Mark de la Coze and Sean Webb all had outstanding games, and keeper Stuart Game handled well.

The only goal came 13 minutes from time. Simon Tabor's free-kick was knocked back by Lyle Gifford and Pendell stooped low to head in.
