AN excellent display by goalkeeper Simon Tricker helped Abingdon United frustate their Ryman League Premier Division opponents on Saturday in the FA Trophy .

Tricker's saves plus a bit of luck and some poor finishing from Staines earned Abingdon a replay back at Northcourt Road tomorrow night.

Tricker was in action as early as the tenth minute when he spread himself to deny Mark Nwokeji.

The ball ran to Gareth Risbridger, who drilled the ball back in low, but Julian McCalmon came to the rescue with a goalline clearance. Then Nwokeji outpaced Tom Franklin and sent in a curling shot that evaded the far upright.

After a quiet spell, the chances resumed just before half-time, as first Risbridger was denied by Tricker and then Nwokeji shot wide.

The second half began with Abingdon's Michael Alexis whipping in a wicked which whizzed past Anaclet Odhiambo's outstetched foot.

At the other end, a corner was not cleared, and Staines's Dave Sargent sent it towards the top corner only for Tricker to fly to his right and claw the ball away to safety.

After Adrian Toppin struck a post for the hosts, Luke Holden set up Abingdon's best chance.

He fed Ryan Curtin, who sent in a well-flighted cross behind the defence for the on the rushing Odhiambo, whose free header flew a foot over the bar.

Nathan Woodley went down with cramp in his first game back from injury and was replaced by Josias Carbon with 15 minutes left.

For the first time, Abingdon started to get at the home defence and brought a good save out of Shaun Allaway at the end of a move between Curtin and Odhiambo.

Nwokeji then blasted in a fierce shot, but once again Tricker was equal to it, diving full length to tip it away. Then Tricker dived low to save well from Victor Asombang.

In the last ten minutes, Toppin saw his fierce drive halted by Tricker, who produced his best save of the game as he reacted flying across the goal and getting both hands to the ball and force it away.

Even then Toppin could have avoided a replay, but shot inches wide.
