BICESTER’S Chui-Que Wong said she was shocked to win a British silver medal.

Despite being unseeded for the under 11 girls’ singles event, the Oxfordshire player impressed at the prestigious PG Mutual National Championships in Wolverhampton.

Wong finished second in her group to reach the knockout stages, before blowing the competition wide open when beating top seed Sienna Jetha 11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4.

The 11-year-old then continued her fine run with an 11-4, 11-9, 7-11, 11-4 victory over Ella Pashley in the last four.

Wong faced Mia Longman in the final and fell two sets behind before saving three match points to clinch the third.

But her opponent recovered to eventually triumph 11-5, 11-5, 11-13, 13-11.

Wong, a Kingsmeadow School, Bicester, pupil, was stunned to take home a medal.

She said: “I didn’t really expect to win anything and I was a bit shocked to get to the final, because I was only runner-up in my group.

“When I beat the top seed I felt shocked but proud at the same time.”

Wong also competed in the under 12 event, but was beaten 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-8 in the last 16 by fourth seed Kate Watkinson.
