HEADINGTON Conservative Club secured the Division 2 title by half a point after a thrilling climax to the Oxford & District League season.
They beat Vikings 4½-1½ to claim top spot, leapfrogging previous leaders Gladiators Club, who lost 4-2 at Democrats Club.
Headington fell behind when Alan Lacey triumphed, but they hit back to lead 2-1, thanks to Roger Tomlin (4,470) and Dave Gordon.
Sid Ponting then drew with Pete Ewins for what turned out to be the crucial half point, before the pairs were shared.
Gladiators twice came from behind through Dave Jarman and Bert Lovegrove at Democrats, but losing both pairs matches proved costly as they slipped to second.
Masons Arms signed off with a 3-3 draw at home to Premier Division champions Oracle A.
Alan Lowe (4,360) and Dave Rose, who ended Mark Trafford’s unbeaten record, triumphed for the hosts.
Ian Gordon (5,350) and Pauline Withey (4,100) were victorious for Oracle, before the pairs were shared.
Berinsfield won 4-2 at Oracle B, thanks to Larry Richens (8,530) and John Boal.
Vinnie Brown and Melvyn Johnson replied for the home side.
