ALICE Hopkins could not hide her delight at being selected to represent Great Britain for the first time.

The Oxford City AC member will compete in the Indoor Combined Events International match in Wales on January 26-27.

Hopkins’s call-up came off the back of her fourth place finish in the indoor pentathlon at Sunday’s England Senior Combined Events Championship in Sheffield.

With two of the athletes above her securing automatic qualification for Cardiff, the 20-year-old was caught by surprise to receive a phone call from Olympic medallist Kelly Sotherton, who is a mentor for British Athletics, confirming her place.

Hopkins said: “It’s amazing – I didn’t really expect it because of where I placed at the weekend.

“I found out while I was shopping. Kelly Sotherton rang me and I had to try to control myself because I was in public.”

She added: “I’ve always wanted to have a GB vest, I just didn’t know when it would come along.

“When I first sat down with (my coach) Marcia (Marriott in 2017) I said to her I would love a vest, but I didn’t realise it would come this early.”

Hopkins recorded new marks in the shot, 60m hurdles and high jump in Sheffield for a personal best overall score of 3,954 points.

She said: “I was really pleased.

“I was over the moon with the pbs.”
