OXFORD University’s first all-female fight night proved to be a big success.
A sell-out crowd of more than 300 crammed into the Iffley Road sportshall, to watch nine well-contested bouts.
Topping the bill was undoubtedly Lydia Welham’s fight against Hayley Webber, from Moulsecoomb.
The Oxford boxer saw off her more experienced rival in the best contest of the night, which produced an electric atmosphere.
Another success came from captain Rachel Wheatley, who displayed a set of fierce punches against Rachel Hutcheon, from St Ives.
Both Welham and Wheatley were awarded unanimous verdicts.
“It was our first ever girl’s show and the support was amazing,” Wheatley said.
“It was a huge success, showing there’s a place for girl’s boxing and our aim is to make this an annual event.”
Malinda Haggett and Kaya Masler also won, with the Oxford team completed by Gina Liu, Ella Penny, Zoey Zhang, Sofia Lindqvist and Jessica Lee.
