Abingdon rod Phil Bennett has been fishing since he was a young lad and has quite an impressive list of fish to his name.

But he got a surprise on his latest outing, when he fished the weirs on the Thames at Sutton Courtenay.

He tackled up with a quiver tip rod, 3lb main line, 2lb hooklink and a size 14 hook which was baited up with a maggot and worm cocktail.

He also used an open ended feeder into which he placed SwimStim Betaine Green groundbait.

Phil soon started to get some small taps on the tip and struck. At first, he thought he had a bream on, but as the fish got closer to his net he saw the bright orange colour of a Koi carp.

Once netted and rested, the fish was weighed and the scales went around to 6lb 6oz.

I suppose the question must be asked: how did a 6lb Koi carp find its way to the Sutton Courtenay weirs?

Was it put into the river from someone's pond, or did it get washed into the river during the July floods?

Whatever, I hope it has a long and happy life in its new home!
