FENCING: Graham Paul won silver in the over 70 men’s foil at the Veterans’ World Championship in Livorno, Italy.
Seeded No 1 after the poules, the 71-year-old, from Upton, looked to be in control of a slow scoring final against Eiichi Ide, but his opponent, from Japan, triumphed 6-5.
He had beaten Japan’s Daizo Kawaguchi 10-8 in the quarter-finals, before overcoming Jan Patterson, of the United States, 10-4 in the last four.
The Oxfordshire competitor also won gold with the Great Britain team, beating Australia, Italy and the United States in the foil event.
BENCHPRESS: Martin Green landed a silver medal at the European Championships in Luxembourg.
The Iron Works Gym, Didcot, member, competed in the 102kg bodyweight class and lifted 252.2kg despite suffering with a shoulder injury.
It marked a successful transition from the 105kg class, which Green won gold in last year.
