CEDRIC thinks the draw at high-flying Bournemouth can be a turning point for Saints.

The goalless encounter at the Vitality Stadium ended a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats for Mark Hughes’ side.

And the Portuguese defender has called on his teammates to put in the same level of performance against Newcastle this Saturday.

Cedric said: “We are trying to get a turning point in the season and I think we showed that.

“We showed that we wanted it more and that we wanted to produce more than we have up until now.

“But we need to immediately show it again in the next game.

“We have to prepare for Newcastle, which of course is a game we want to win. Our target is to win in every game and especially when you play at home.

“To win against Newcastle will be very important for us.”

Due to an unsettled back four, it was only Saints’ third clean sheet in the Premier League from the opening nine games.

Cedric views himself as the new breed of full-back who loves to bomb forward in attack and contribute further up the pitch.

However, he knows that his main responsibility in the team is to remain solid and compact at the back to snuff out the opposition’s forward line.

“People forget that we need to defend first,” Cedric added.

“I think people are talking a lot because maybe full-backs are forgetting to defend or are maybe conceding too many goals.

“The first job as a full-back is to defend well. The first job as a centre-back is to defend well.

“After, if you can add something in the attack then that’s even better. Of course, there are compensations as there a lot of things happening in the game.

“My main point in every game is to defend well and if I can attack, then I will because I like it.

“I think every player likes it [attacking], but me especially, I like going forward.”

Newcastle are currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and Saints will see this game as one where they can pick up their first win at home this season.

Saturday’s clash also gives Hughes’ team the opportunity to put some daylight between themselves and the Magpies and steer clear of a relegation battle.

Saints haven’t kept a clean sheet at St Mary’s since the opening day of the season and Cedric stated the importance of not losing their heads if they concede at the weekend.

The defender said: “Our goal in every game is not to get any goals in our goal and score more than our opponent.

“It is what we are going to try and do 100 percent.

“But if they get a goal, then we need to react.  It is something we are working on because sometimes our team gets disappointed after a goal and it is something we maybe need to improve.

“The main point is to not get any goals against us.”
