IT WAS obviously great to get a win last week against Plymouth Argyle.

But I was tempted to pin the league table up in the dressing room on Monday just to stop anyone from getting carried away.

We won one game, that is all, but we now need to get a second win, then a third, and start to make progress up the league table.

Victory last week was just massive for us and I was delighted with the way we played.

A few people in the build up said something like ‘it doesn’t matter how we win, just so long as we win’.

I get that, but it’s even better to put in an outstanding performance, stick to our principles, and get a win from doing the right things.

In the end we got the best of both worlds.

I thought we were comfortable all game in defence, creative up front and the whole side worked hard with Jamie Mackie personifying the spirit of the whole team.

He led the line so intelligently and I think has improved with each game he has played.

He is a great professional and has got fitter and fitter – the same is true right now of Marcus Browne and Samir Carruthers, who was outstanding in a friendly win on Tuesday.

I have never lost my faith in this set of players, despite our league position.

But we have so rarely been able to name either an unchanged line-up or what I think would be our strongest XI this season.

Even today at Bristol Rovers we are without Cameron Brannagan through suspension and the very unfortunate Jon Obika who looks like he has played his last game this season.

That is terrible luck for Jon, one of the most decent and honest professionals that I have ever worked with.

I know that Rob Hall, who is recovering from a similar injury, was one of the first to get in touch with him after it became apparent that the injury was serious.

That speaks volumes for the sort of person that Rob is as well as the togetherness in this squad.

Jon will come back from the injury and we will do all we can to help him get through this setback.

In the meantime it may mean a chance for someone else to impress.

We do have options, especially with Gavin Whyte back from international duty, so let’s start where we left off last weekend and do all we can to get a win at Bristol Rovers today.

I DID have to laugh this week when we played a friendly down the A420 and they asked us not to mention the game.

But that was something that became impossible once Jon Obika got injured.

We have respected their wishes as much as we can, but that has taken the limelight, somewhat unfairly, away from Kyran Lofthouse, Sam Long and Albie Hopkins, all of whom have come through the youth system and fully understand the significance of scoring against our local rivals in a 3-1 win.

I wonder if you have worked out who we beat yet?!
