BANBURY Central’s golden oldies became national champions after landing the Tony Allcock Over 60’s Mixed Double Rink Trophy at Worthing.

Playing in the event for the eighth time, Central overcame 2016 champions Lindfield (Sussex) 47-35 in the final.

Both their rinks won, with Mary Tee, Brenda Havard, Nigel Galletly and Michael Andrew edging home

20-16, while Eloise Jones, Pam Shepherd, Graham Morbey and Keith McNeil cruised in 27-19.

Their closest contest came in the quarter-finals where they pipped Hemmingford (Huntingdon) 32-31, before they beat Cove (Hampshire) 38-34 in the last four.

  • OXFORDSHIRE suffered a 26-shot defeat by Bucks in their last Home Counties League match at Banbury Chestnuts to finish the season in fourth spot.
