To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns.

1964

OXFORD United’s unbeaten start in Division 4 continued, but they took little comfort from their 1-1 draw at Barrow.

A draw was a fair result, for neither side deserved more than one point for a thoroughly ragged and untidy affair.

But it was felt United should be winning games against the likes of Barrow and the other weaker sides as a prestige booster and as a reserve for tougher away games.

This was a game United should have won, yet in which they went desperately close to defeat.

1984

DAVE Langan signed a two-year contract at Oxford United just six weeks after joining on a

three-month trial.

Langan, out of the game for 18 months after three serious operations, put pen to paper to end a nightmare for the Republic of Ireland defender.

The 27-year-old right back, who cost Birmingham £350,000 from Derby in 1980, was given a free transfer by Ron Saunders earlier in the summer.

United manager Jim Smith said: “We needed to check his fitness, but in the short time he has been here he has come through some tough games and proved beyond doubt that he is now fully fit.”

A delighted Langan said: “Six months ago I thought I might have to pack the game in, especially if the knee gave way again, but I’ve come through it all right.

“I can’t stress how relieved I am to have another chance of playing league soccer.”

1995

PAUL Moody earned Oxford United a point in a highly-charged local derby at Swindon and then predicted the draw would prove just the launchpad the team needs.

“I think this could be the turning point in the season for us,” he said, after seeing his second-half equaliser bring Swindon’s 100 per cent record to an end.

“I don’t think we’ve really clicked into gear yet, but we’ll really fancy our chances now.”
