STEVE Robertson’s dramatic late winner earned Wantage Town a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory at Fairford Town on the opening day of the Uhlsport Hellenic League season.

The hosts took the lead after just six minutes of the Premier Division clash when John Thomas tapped in after goalkeeper Curtis Meare spilled a cross.

But two minutes later, the game swung in Wantage’s favour as Fairford’s Josh Jones was shown a straight red card for a rash tackle.

The visitors were unable to convert a number of chances and conceded for a second time on 65 minutes when Thomas scored again.

However, Wantage quickly reduced the arrears with 20 minutes to go, Chris Jackson scoring from the penalty spot after a push on Mark Flanagan.

And it was soon 2-0 when Robertson fired home on 75 minutes.

There was still time for Wantage to complete the comeback as Robertson scored again in the first minute of stoppage time.

Billy Gillett’s penalty proved just a consolation as newly-promoted Ardley United lost 4-1 at home to Binfield.

Abingdon United suffered a 2-0 defeat at Holmer Green, while Shrivenham were beaten 5-1 by Reading Town, Nathan Blackford netting from the spot.

Anaclet Odhiambo’s four-timer helped Abingdon Town beat Woodley United 6-4 in Division 1 East.

Elliott Osborne-Ricketts scored twice as the hosts came back from 3-1 down.

In Division 1 West, Easington Sports beat Pewsey Vale 4-0.

Andrew Stidder (2), Joe Eyre and Sam Grant scored.

Kevin Davies hit a hat-trick, with Sam Elbro also on target, as Kidlington Res beat Cirencester Town Dev 4-1.
