MATT Williams is calling on his players to make the most of a big occasion and help Chinnor create history.

The Thame-based side host Sedgley Park in the National League 2 play-offs tomorrow, bidding to reach the third tier of English rugby for the first time.

Chinnor, who finished second in the south division, face the north runners-up for a place in National League 1.

Director of rugby Williams is backing his side, but says their mentality is crucial.

He said: “The message to the boys is to leave nothing on the field and perform to their maximum ability.

“Then there can be no regrets and we should come out on the right side.

“Home advantage is key and the boys have worked very hard for the last two seasons, we came very close last year.

“The difference between success and failure is very simple – are they switched on in the top two inches?

“We would be disappointed if they are not in this one-off shoot-out.

“We have enough experience in our squad to relish the occasion.”

Williams added: “This is an opportunity for us to make history at Chinnor and be the class of 17/18 that made the youngest club in the National League reach the top tier of semi-professional rugby.”

The club are hoping to attract a bumper crowd to Kingsey Road to help cheer the side on to victory.

Chinnor’s players have produced the goods in front of gates of more than 1,000 in recent years and Williams is hopeful it will give his side a major boost.

He said: “This is not just about us. This is about Oxfordshire rugby and it deserves a National 1 team, so it would be great if people from across the county could come out and support us.”

Chinnor make three changes, one positional, from last weekend’s victory over Clifton.

Half-backs Josh Barton and Jonny Bentley start, with Bertie Hopkin switching to full back.
