PHIL Trainer capped an eye-catching performance with a superb goal as Oxford United beat Coca-Cola League One side Bournemouth at the Kassam Stadium on Friday night.

The midfielder, signed from Moor Green in the summer, impressed on the left of midfield with his presence and good passing.

And on 15 minutes, he hammered home a left-footed drive from 20 yards after a corner wasn't properly cleared.

Trainer almost repeated the feat at the start of the second half, with another fierce drive that flew narrowly wide.

Former England international Darren Anderton equalised for the Cherries in the 25th minute with a close-range header from Ryan Garry's left-wing cross.

But United regained the lead four minutes into the second half with another good finish from Yemi Odubade.

The former Eastbourne striker started the move on the right, with a powerfully hit crossfield pass.

Alex Jeannin then picked him out with a left-wing centre and Odubade controlled the ball skilfully on his chest - with what appeared to be the help of an arm - before firing home.

Jim Smith's side didn't look two divisions below their opponents as they played some excellent football, with the new signings all playing a part.

Gary Twigg got in front of his marker to reach a right-wing cross first, and a smart move down the left ended with a useful cross from Jeannin which Eddie Hutchinson met at the far post, but couldn't get under it.

Michael Standing began nervously and gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box. But he gradually got more effective as time wore on.

Bournemouth's Shabazz Baidoo netted, but the goal was disallowed because Jo Kuffour was offside.

Jeannin produced some impressive inswinging corners from the right, and at the back, as ever, Barry Quinn was tremendous for United, as was Matt Day in the left-sided central defensive role.

Their passing and movement was good, and the 3-5-2 system looks ideally suited.

U's keeper Chris Tardif made a fine save with his legs from Kuffour after the break.

There was just one blemish, with Day getting a yellow-carded for an over-zealous tackle, but the rest of the night was full of plusses for Smith.

Oxford Utd: Tardif, Corcoran (Robinson 60), Quinn, Day, Anaclet (Pettefer 60), Hutchinson, Standing (Ledgister 60), Trainer, Jeannin, Odubade (Foster 60), Twigg (Duffy 60).
