OXFORD United have signed attacking midfielder Jack Payne on a season-long loan from Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town.

The 22-year-old will join up with Pep Clotet’s squad for tomorrow’s pre-season friendly at Leeds United, having passed a medical earlier today.

Payne signed for Huddersfield on a free from Southend United last summer, scoring two goals in 23 league appearances as the west Yorkshire club won promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

United manager Clotet said: "We’ve been monitoring Jack’s situation for a while.

“I know him well and followed his progress in the Championship last season and the club also had good reports on him from his time at Southend, so we're delighted to see him joining the squad.

“He fits the profile of what we want here - exciting, talented young players who are hungry to do well, mixed with experienced professionals to help them - and the side - develop.”

Payne spent three years at Roots Hall and netted his first senior goal against United in a 1-1 draw in 2014.

He swept the board at Southend’s end-of-season awards in 2016, before joining the Terriers that summer.

Clotet added: “Jack likes to operate in the No 10 role, his attributes make him an exciting player who's able to link up and operate very well in attacking positions and that offers us one or two very interesting options up front.

“He is a good player who works hard, never gives up, and who we believe the fans will take to straight away.”
