JADE O’Dowda excelled in her first appearance in an England vest by winning the over 16 girls title at the International Schools Combined Events in Ireland.

The 17-year-old Oxford City member recorded two personal bests in the five-event competition, held indoors in Athlone.

Her haul of 3,992 points was 118 ahead of nearest challenger, Anna McCauley from Ireland, and helped England’s four-strong squad win the team crown.

The Gosford Hill School pupil started in fine form, setting a pb of 12.33 metres in the shot put to lie third after the opening event.

Another best followed in the 60m hurdles, when she clocked 8.58secs to claim 1,000 points.

O’Dowda was again the pick of the field with 5.73m in the long jump, before she consolidated her position at the top of the standings with a solid 1.63m in the high jump.

And an excellent performance was rounded off in the final event – the 800m.

O’Dowda narrowly missed out on another pb, crossing the line third in 2mins 23.97secs to confirm top spot on the podium.

It rounded off an impressive year for the rising star, who won the English Schools’ Combined Events Championships title in September.
