Oxford United will meet this week to try and resolve a dispute between a section of flag-waving supporters and stewards.

After a confrontation in the East Stand during the first half of United’s 1-1 draw with Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League One on Saturday, the banners on display at the back of the stand were taken down by fans, some of whom then left the stadium.

The supporters were not ejected from the ground, but departed of their own accord after being reprimanded for waving flags during the match.

This goes against an agreement which is in place and states supporters can only wave flags before the match, after a goal is scored, and at half-time and full-time.

The club are keen to get to the bottom of the incident to ensure there is no repeat.

United's managing director Greig Box Turnbull told the Oxford Mail: "I was as shocked as anybody when I looked over and saw the flags and banners at the back of the stand being taken down.

"I spoke to the safety officers after the game, spoke to the Ultras (who organise the flag and banner displays) on Saturday night and spoke with OxVox today.

"The desire is certainly there to ensure we are all on the same page and can move forward together."

He added: "In terms of what happened on Saturday, I am awaiting a full report from the safety officer.

"There is an agreement in place as to when the big flags can be waved and that has been the rule for quite some time.

"It appears some people were waving them during the game and when they were asked to stop, it all got a bit heated.

"But we will sit down this week, talk to all the parties involved and then move forward together."
