THREE-TIME Olympic gold medallist Andy Triggs Hodge is the stand-out name shortlisted for the 2016 Oxfordshire Sports Awards.

The rower, who announced his retirement from the sport shortly after triumphing in Rio, will bid to win the sportsman of the year award for a second time, having also collected the honour in 2012.

Fellow Olympic rower Fran Houghton, who hails from Wheatley is also in with a chance of glory in the sportswoman of the year category after winning a silver medal in Brazil.

Triggs Hodge, from Checkendon, is up against Oxford City athlete Tim Stephens, who won the English Schools Under 20 decathlon title, despite being only 18, and Kyran Anthony, who retained his solo title in the world hip-hop championships.

Houghton faces Linsey Smith, the Aston Rowant cricketer who played in the inaugural Kia Super League, and Kate Williamson, an Eynsham athlete who set a new British record for women over 70 in this year’s London Marathon.

Oxford United are shortlisted for the team of the year after securing promotion and reaching a Wembley final.

But they face tough competition from the Oxford Saints American footballers, who went through their season unbeaten, and Harlequin Bowmen archers, from south Oxfordshire, who won the national team title for the seventh successive year.

The junior sportsperson category – as always the toughest-contested – sees gymnast Ben Goodall, swimmer David Murphy and hockey player Miriam Pritchard battle it out.

Goodall was called up to the Great Britain squad and came fifth in the world tumbling championships in Denmark.

Another product of King Alfred’s Academy, Wantage, Murphy was double British champion and also won a silver and two bronze medals for England in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Oxford Hawks’ Pritchard, despite being only 17, was called up to the England Under 21 hockey squad and helped her country’s under 18 side to bronze at the European Championships.

The winners will be announced at an awards night, held at Oxford’s Kassam Stadium on Friday, January 27.

Tickets are available at oxspa.co.uk or by emailing JLenthall@oxford.gov.uk.
