An unbeaten half-century by Shahbaz Ali guided Kidlington to an exciting last-over victory in their rain-affected match against Kew at Stratfield Brake on Saturday.

However, when Kidlington reduced Kew to 21-6, thanks to hostile spell from Josh Lalor, an early finish looked likely.

Kew, all out for 77 the previous week, had no idea against Lalor, who swung the new ball at severe pace to bowl the top four on the way to figures of 7-60 from 17 overs.

Then Kidron Thomas produced an innings that changed the game.

The West Indian overseas player from Grenada, added a quick fire 60 in a seventh-wicket stand of 97 with Nick Ellis to help Kew reach 147.

When the rain between the innings eventually relented, Kidlington needed 148 from 37 overs.

Jamil Faruq rode his luck to make 40, before Shabaz found a useful ally in Lalor, who helped raise 53 for the fifth wicket.

Shahbaz, who was dropped twice, faced the last six balls with Kidlington needing seven to win.

Three dot balls raised the tempo, but a massive six over mid-wicket took the scores level and Shahbaz to a well deserved half-century.

Then a single of the next ball took Kidlington to second in the table.
