OXFORDSHIRE'S Lawrence Clarke will not compete at another Olympic Games after missing out on the 110m hurdles final in Rio earlier this morning.

The 26-year-old from Christmas Common, near Watlington, finished sixth in his semi-final, crossing in 13.46secs - just 0.05 off Canada's Jonathan Cabral, who made it through as the last fastest loser.

Clarke, who came fourth at London 2012, has had a difficult ten months, losing his funding from UK Athletics after deciding to train in Paris under Samba-Koundy Giscard.

After his semi-final, the former Summer Fields, Summertown, pupil revealed he would not be competing at the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

He told the BBC: "I had a go for it (the Olympic final), I was in the lane next to the world number one (Omar McLeod) and he got out.

"I was going well in the first bit of the race, I pressed and took the risks, hit two hurdles and it wasn't to be.

"It's been an amazing journey to get here.

"It's quite emotional because this is my last Olympics.

"In one I came fourth, in London, and a semi-final at another. I can't complain."

However, Clarke has not ruled out competing at next year's IAAF World Championships in London.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist added: "I don't know what is next.

"I was taken off funding last year and moved to Paris and put everything financially and emotionally into this year and I believe it paid off.

"I'm going to get home, take a bit of time off and consider what comes next.

"The World Championships next year would be amazing, but let's see."
