Oxford City's Ben Kelsey collected a hat-trick of victories in the throwing events to help his team to victory in Southern League Division 3 West at Basingstoke.

The victory puts City joint top of the table, with Radley just a point further behind, after they also won their meeting in Exeter.

After an apprehensive start due to the absence of a number of middle-distances runners, City got the ball rolling with wins in the hammer, long jump and 40m hurdles.

Kelsey won the hammer, not his favoured event, with an impressive throw of 35.94m, then added victory in the shot with a personal best of 14.08pb.

He completed his impressive day with a win in the discus, despite five successive no throws.

Determined to get his final attempt in, he took the foot off the gas, but still managed 44.04m to win the event.

Gareth Davies leapt to a massive 6.21m in the long jump, and Andrew Tippet strolled to victory in the 400m hurdles, clocking 58.4secs.

From then on, Oxford took command of the competition and recorded another 15 victories.

Of these, Ian Castle impressed in the javelin, when he recorded a throw of 41.86 and Davies leapt to 13.09m to win the triple jump.

Chris Williams battled to a win in the 400m in 51.4, and City bagged victory in both the 4x100 and 4x400m relays with times of 45.5 and 3.34.8 respectively.

Result: 1 Oxford C 144pts, 2 Basingstoke 132, 3 Team Kennet 116, 4 Overton 112.
