Mali Richards said playing against the West Indies had been a surreal experience, and is still tipping them to shock England.

The Oxford UCCE all-rounder, son of Windies legend Sir Viv Richards, was in the MCC side who drew with his country at Durham University's Racecourse Ground on Sunday.

Richards, who is writing a column in the Oxford Mail during the England versus West Indies Test and one-day series, was happy to be selected.

"It was a bit of a surreal experience, but it was good to catch up with guys like Dwayne Bravo and Sylvester Joseph," said Richards.

"The banter was good fun. I expected it, but it was done in the right humour.

"They were saying things like 'English boy', you are playing for them now are you?'.

"I didn't know that the MCC were going to use university players in this match, so it was a welcome surprise.

"From a batting point of view, I got to 26 and a made a start, which was good.

"I was carrying a heel injury, so I didn't get to bowl as much as I wanted."

Richards, 23, is friends with many players in the Windies squad, and enjoyed the chance to catch up.

He added: "I was a bit disappointed that they didn't try and press for the win to boost their confidence.

"I thought Fidel Edwards bowled very well. He ran in and bowled with real fire.

"Darren Sammy impressed me as well. He knows the English conditions well and causes problems.

"I don't think Sammy will play against England, but I expect Edwards will."

Despite their humiliation at Headingley, Richards remains optimistic for the series, which resumes at Old Trafford tomorrow.

"I am going for the West Indies to provide a shock at some point," he said.

"Hopefully they can just get it right on the day because it will take consistency.

"They have got to get all their departments right.

"I don't know if Chanderpaul is fit again and he is vital.

"I was a bit surprised that Marlon Samuels was left out in the first place, but he should play now."
