FORMER Oxford United defender Matt Bevans has signed for Vanarama National League South neighbours Oxford City.

The 22-year-old full-back made 12 first team appearances for the U's during a two-year spell at the club, which ended with his release in May.

But after impressing during a recent trial period, Bevans could be set to feature in City's league fixture at home to Hemel Hempstead Town on Saturday.

"He's been training with us for a few weeks and he's impressed," said general manager Justin Merritt.

City have been handed a potentially lucrative tie in the second round of the FA Trophy, at home to National League leaders Cheltenham Town.

The Robins, competing in the competition for the first time since 1999 following their relegation from the Football League last season, will visit Marsh Lane on Saturday, January 16.

And after easing past Ebbsfleet United in the first round with a 3-1 win on Saturday, Merritt is looking forward to the challenge.

He said: "It's got everything. They're top of the league above, they're well supported and they're local.

"For me, it's the perfect draw."

Meanwhile, Kidlington have been drawn at home to Combined Counties League Premier Division side Knaphill in the fourth round of the FA Vase.

Wantage Town host promotion-chasing Tiverton Town this evening in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West.

The Alfredians are just one point above the relegation zone following their disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Bridgwater Town on Saturday.
