Riley captured their first Oxford & District League trophy by upsetting Fieldside 5-0 in the Stephen Reiss Cup final at Cowley Conservative Club.

The Division 2 basement boys took advantage of the Division 1 side being without their two leading players Simon Aries (-50) and Bob Chivers (-40).

Fieldside did have Paul Robinson (-30), but by the time he got to the table the match was as good as over.

Allan Copelin (+90) got Riley off to the perfect start, hanging on to his handicap lead to beat Lee Stopps (+70), who was making his seasonal debut, 150-128.

Malcolm Bough (+70) then pipped Mike Chapman (+100) 150-146 to make it 2-0 with an aggregate lead of 300-274.

David Lo (+90) played Robinson (-30) in the final game.

With his huge handicap start and his tactics of potting his opponent's cue ball and leaving both balls in baulk, Lo was never really threatened.

Robinson, clearly unhappy with his opponent's tactics, could do little right, before finally making a 45-break.

However, it wasn't enough and Lo went on to win 200-165 to make it 3-0.

And with Riley also picking up the two points for coming out on top on aggregate, their final margin of victory was a resounding 5-0.

In The Oxford Times semi-finals, also at Cowley Conservative Club, Terry Chambers swept aside Bob Hayward 500-295 and Simon Aries overcame Paul Robinson 500-467.

Chambers led from the start in his match, making breaks of 21, 24 and 30 against Hayward, who replied with a run of 23.

The semi-final between Aries and Robinson was a much closer affair.

Aries notched a top break of 31 and six other runs in the 20s on the way to establishing a commanding lead.

In the last half-hour, Robinson made breaks of 61 and 71, but Aries held on for victory.

The final is at Cowley Conservative Club tonight (7.15).
