Witney were celebrating after they were crowned joint champions in Division 1 of the Chiltern League.

They share the title with old rivals Newport Pagnell.

It is the first time that the title has been shared in the history of the league.

Witney, who like last season, went through the campaign undefeated, wrapped up the championship when they tied with Newport Pagnell in the final gala of the season at Linslade, Bedfordshire, on Saturday.

In a thrilling encounter, the lead changed hands several times between the top two protagonists But even after 50 events, the teams could not be separated.

Fifteen-year-old Oliver Sharpin continued his impressive form, winning the men's open freestyle.

That earned him Witney's swimmer-of-the-match award, with the runner-up vote going to Joshua Relph, who stormed to victory in the boys' 14 & under freestyle.

Encouraging signs were also shown by the ten & under boys' relay teams in which Rowan Prosser, Marc Colling, Alex Foggett and Callum Moss earned Witney a double in their medley and freestyle events.

There were also individual victories for Leah Gorman (butterfly), Naomi Moore (backstroke), Tanja Wolf (breaststroke), Sam Bark (butterfly), Harry Blackford (backstroke), Peter Hyde (breaststroke) and Rowan Prosser (backstroke).

Personal bests were recorded by Sydney Skinner (breaststroke), Amy Tuckey (butterfly), Georgia French (freestyle), Ellen Moore (backstroke), Andrew Tivey (freestyle), Elliot Jozwin (butterfly), Scott Webster (IM).

Gala result: 1= Witney & Newport Pagnell 183, 3 Leyton Buzzard 178, 3 Wellingborough 152, 4 Letchworth 142, 5 Houghton Regis 139.
