Jez Hicks has spoken of Witney's immense disappointment at letting slip the Southern Counties North title.

Witney could still secure a play-off spot, but captain Hicks feels the crown Bletchley won on Saturday should have been theirs.

He said: "We are massively frustrated about the league. We know we have thrown it away.

"We can pick out three or four matches where we've blown it.

"This season is the best opportunity we have had for a long time.

"Everyone is gutted we've not won the title. The boys are feeling a lot of regret."

Saturday's 39-10 victory over Amersham & Chiltern showed just how well Witney can play, but Hicks admitted they have not done it enough.

Witney can point to several close matches they have lost as well as draws with Milton Keynes and Olney.

"We've really struggled with consistency," said Hicks.

"In games like Amersham and the cup final against Quins, we put in some really strong performances.

"Amersham were supposed to be one of the strongest sides in the league, but we took them apart.

"We know that when we play well, we are a really good side, but we've thrown games away.

"We really should be four or six points clear at the top of the league. The title should have been decided a couple of matches ago."

Can Hicks put his finger on the problem?

"It's always been about attitude," he said.

"Some games we have turned up pretty fired up, but there have been others where we have been too relaxed.

"We need to get that right."

Despite his frustration, Hicks, however, remains positive for the future.

He said: "The majority of the side will stick together next year.

"I think we are going in the right direction.

"We have been really focussed in training.

"If we can keep that going, we'll be able to mount a really big push for the league again."

  • Witney Cherubs celebrated their first victory of the season with a 56-31 home success over Chesham.

They scored first and never looked back even after a flurry from Chesham just before half-time.

Witney, however, were always in control and did themselves and the club proud running in ten tries, with great individual flair and team play.

Try scorers were Sadie Mansell (2), Mickey Harris (2), Abs Clinkard (2), Steph Harris, Charlotte Stringfellow, Ellie Lewis and Pip Dines. Mansell kicked three conversions.
