A depleted Witney side put in one of their best performances of the season as they beat Amersham 39-10 win against in Southern Counties North at Hailey Road.

From their skill and commitment, you would not have known Witney were missing four of the side that started the Oxfordshire Cup final.

But they will now have to hope Amersham can pick themselves up to defeat Tadley in their final match if they are to sneak a play-off spot.

Witney made great use of the strong wind behind them in the first period with fly half Ollie Smith's kicking constantly penning them in their own 22.

Henry Lamb was also in fine form with the boot, putting Witney ahead from a long-range penalty after seven minutes.

A powerful break from skipper Jez Hicks almost set up a try for left wing Ben Rollinson soon afterwards before Henry Lamb made it 6-0 with a far simpler penalty.

Right wing Lewis Collins was just forced into touch, but it was only a matter of time before a try came.

On 22 minutes, Witney's dominant pack were rewarded for their patience when No 8 Simon Copperwheat was driven over.

Henry Lamb almost created a try for Smith, but the fly half's clever chip kick set up a score for Rollinson following a favourable bounce after 31 minutes.

Predictably Henry Lamb made no mistake with the conversion. He would have been lining up another attempt on 35 minutes had Copperwheat not knocked on inches short of a pushover try.

All Amersham had to show from the half was a couple of half breaks from wingers Ash Dowle and Sam Portland.

Amersham trailed 25-0 at the break following a second try from Rollinson, created by hard-running centre Chris Murray, and converted by Henry Lamb.

With the wind in their faces, Witney would have expected to spend much of the second half defending.

But they pretty much picked up where they left off and saw Lewis go close after 43 minutes.

A scrappy period ensued before Witney scrum half Gareth Campbell was pulled back for a knock on as he looked to have broken through.

There was no stopping Smith on 61 minutes when he sidestepped his way through a static Amersham defence to score under the posts for Henry Lamb to convert.

Witney brought Martin Lyall on for his farewell appearance, but it was another replacement, Amersham's Alan Simmons, who was driven over in stoppage time.

More than 11 minutes were added on in all, which allowed Henry Lamb to finish and convert a try set up by his brother James.

There was still time for Dowle to scamper over for the visitors, but it was without doubt Witney's day.
