A first-half strike by Mark Simms sent Witney United through to the quarter-finals of the Linaker Insurance Brokers Cup with a 1-0 victory against Wantage Town.

With the wind at their backs, the home side pressed in the first-half, Lee Keyes firing narrowly over the bar.

On 17 minutes, Witney netted what proved to be the winning goal.

Dwight Jones picked up the ball on the right before driving in a cross which Simms headed powerfully past Terry Burton.

Burton did well to deny Perna, while at the other end, Tom Austrin brought an excellent save from Witney keeper Paul Tassell.

Tassell was again in action on the stroke of half-time, saving well from Danny Keen's shot.

After the break, some quick work by Simms saw him cross to Keyes, who side-footed wide, and John McMahon's run and shot brought a good save from Burton.

A long-ball almost caught Witney out when Richard Bourne got in between two defenders, but his lob went high and wide.

In stoppage time, Wantage almost equalised, Mark McMeeking deflecting a Wayne Harbert cross goalwards, but Tassell brilliantly tipped the ball away.
